From High School Discovery Flight to Naval Aviator: Jake Alchin’s Inspiring Journey

By Mark Ricker

Soaring through the skies with unwavering passion, Jake Alchin’s journey from a high school discovery flight to becoming a future naval aviator is nothing short of extraordinary. As a dedicated flight instructor at D2’s Flight Training Center, Jake’s story is a beacon of inspiration for aspiring pilots. In an exclusive interview, he opens up about his journey, the challenges he has faced, and his ambitious dreams while offering a captivating glimpse into the life of a driven and inspired young aviator.

From Passion to Profession

Jake’s love for flying began early, “I have always been passionate about flying since the day I started,” he recalls. His journey with D2 began as a junior in high school when he took a discovery flight. This experience proved to be a pivotal moment that ignited his desire to train future aviators. “I took a discovery flight, and I was sold from there,” Jake said. “I started flight training the following summer, and the rest is history,” he adds.

But Jake’s passion for flying wasn’t just about being in the air–it was about sharing that passion with others. “To be able to share my passion for flying and train the future generation of aviators is what inspired me to become a flight instructor,” he explains. This drive to inspire and educate others has been a cornerstone of his career, making him a beloved instructor at D2.

Training the Next Generation

Working with the Air Force Junior ROTC (AFJROTC) program at D2 was a significant aspect of Jake’s early career. He describes it as “one of the most challenging but rewarding experiences.”

The AFJROTC program is designed to develop leadership skills, discipline, and a strong sense of responsibility among high school students. For Jake, this meant not only teaching the technical aspects of flying but also instilling these core values in his cadets.

The biggest challenge Jake faced was ensuring his students met their deadlines and progressed as planned. “I overcame this by prior planning and paying attention to detail,” Jake explains. He meticulously tracked his students’ flight time and progress, ensuring they were on the right path to success.

The reward for his hard work came when all four of his cadets passed their check rides on the first attempt. “Seeing my students go from having no experience to becoming private pilots in just eight weeks was the most rewarding part,” he shares. This transformation was not just about acquiring flying skills but also about building confidence and resilience in his cadets.

Jake’s experience with the AFJROTC program significantly improved his people skills. “As an instructor with four students, I was tasked with identifying each of my students’ learning styles and adapting my teaching style to accommodate them,” he said.

Memorable Moments

Jake’s time at D2 is filled with memorable moments, particularly the successes of his students. He fondly remembers Jack and Ryan, two standout cadets who made significant strides under his guidance.

Jack was the first in the group to go solo, a milestone that marked the beginning of his journey as a pilot. Ryan followed closely, soloing right after Jack. This tandem achievement was a tribute to their hard work and Jake’s effective instruction.

The most memorable day for Jake was when both Jack and Ryan took their check rides on the same day. “Ryan went first and was the first in the group to pass the check ride, and Jack passed his right after him,” Jake recalls. This back-to-back success was incredibly rewarding for Jake, as it highlighted the culmination of weeks of rigorous training and dedication.

Another unforgettable moment for Jake was when he learned that all four of his cadets had passed their check rides on the first attempt. “When I found out that all four of my students passed their check rides on their first attempt, I knew at that point my job was done,” he shares. This achievement was particularly special because it demonstrated the effectiveness of his teaching methods and the hard work of his students.

For Jake, these moments are not just about the technical achievements but also about witnessing the personal growth and confidence of his students. “Seeing my students succeed, especially Jack and Ryan, was incredibly rewarding,” he says. These experiences have reinforced Jake’s passion for teaching and his commitment to nurturing the next generation of aviators.

Balancing Act

Balancing responsibilities at D2 with his own training and education required excellent time management. “The key is having hard-set priorities,” Jake advises. This skill will undoubtedly serve him well in his future endeavors.

Preparing Future Aviators

Jake’s approach to preparing his cadets for their check rides was meticulous. “I made sure they were exposed to every single task on the check ride and could demonstrate it to ACS standards,” he explains. He believes that qualities like time management, open-mindedness, hard work, and humility are essential for cadets to succeed.

Looking Ahead

Jake’s aspirations extend beyond his current role. He dreams of becoming a naval aviator, flying the F/A-18 Super Hornet, and eventually transitioning to the F-35C Lightning. “Being a Blue Angel pilot has always been a dream of mine,” he reveals. His long-term goals include attending prestigious schools like the US Naval Test Pilot School and Navy Fighter Weapons School (TOPGUN).

University Life and Beyond

Jake is set to attend the University of Arizona on a 4-year NROTC scholarship. “Flying out to the west coast by myself was a huge leap of faith,” he admits. He looks forward to meeting like-minded peers and making lifelong memories.

During his summer cruises with the Navy and Marine Corps, Jake expects to gain invaluable experience. From spending time on ships and submarines to flying in Navy aircraft, these experiences will shape his future career.

Staying Connected

Even as he transitions to university life, Jake plans to stay connected with the aviation community. He aims to surround himself with like-minded peers, seek mentorship, and join aviation-related clubs. “I will also try to do some flying on the side if I have time,” he adds.
